First watermelon of the season. It is just a small one, sitting on the kitchen counter, and I am full of anticipation. Will it be sweet and juicy? Or is it still a bit too early for watermelons to be good? A friend bought early peaches this week and was disappointed, the peaches looked promising but were hard and tasteless. When Rome is baking in summer heat and the streets are radiating heat in the afternoon sun, there is nothing like a cold slice of watermelon, straight from the fridge. Watermelons are massive here, so we buy a wedge and lug it home, rearranging the fridge to squeeze it in. Maybe this one will be as good as the ones I remember from last year?
